Transparent label on transparent user control

I have a picturebox that I'm putting a user control on top of. Now the user
control correctly is transparent. However, the labels on the user control
are not transparent although I've told them to be. It's as if they're
getting the color somewhere way up the line. Is there any way to get around
this or create a derived label that won't paint a background at all?

Also I could set the background image on the control rather than using a
picturebox, but the speed on that is horrid. Unless somebody can tell me
how to speed that up so it's not really noticable.
