Need to capture the first digit of the textbox on keypress event

E.g: The textbox has text "18765" and we dont know at which place the
user is keying in the next number. for instance, If the user keys in
"9" in the first digit place. I need to determine on keypress what the
digit is being entered and if the digit is being entered at the "first
character place" and if it is greater than 5, give an alert. Please
help. Its urgent. Please mail to feroz2rhyme@gmail.com
