My understanding is that Internet Explorer will always run the latest
installed version of the .NET framework when hosting controls. While
investigating a problem with a VS2005 / .NET 2.0 control that we host in IE,
I began to suspect based on the fusion bind error log that the browser was
running .NET 1.1 even though 2.0 was also installed.
To verify this, I developed a very simple control using VS2003 / .NET 1.1
that merely displays the result of System.Environment.Version.ToString().
Sure enough, on the systems we are having problems on, the simple control
displays 1.1.4322.2032, even though 2.0 has been installed. All of the
"working" systems display 2.0.50727.42.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling 2.0 on a couple of the machines but
the result did not change. Any ideas what would cause IE to run .NET 1.1
even when a newer .NET framework is present?
Thanks,
Jesse

Hi Jesse,
When we host .NET Windows Forms controls in a web page and browse the web
page in IE, IE uses an assembly called IEHost.dll to host the .NET Windows
Forms controls in it.
Every version of .NET Framework has an IEHost.dll assembly. If IE is using
the IEHost.dll assembly of .NET 1.1 version, .NET 1.1 is loaded. If IE is
using the IEHost.dll of .NET 2.0 version, .NET 2.0 is loaded.
Generally speaking, when a newer version of .NET Framework is installed, IE
will use the newer version IEHost.dll assembly. If IE on your machine
doesn't use the IEHost.dll of the newer version, you may have a try
reinstalling IE.
Alternatetively, you could use a config file to force IE to load .NET 2.0.
To do this, create a config file called iexplore.exe.config in the same
folder as IExplore.exe and the config file will have the following contents.
<?xml version ="1.0"?>
<configuration>
<startup>
<supportedRuntime version="v2.0.50727" />
</startup>
</configuration>
Hope this helps.
If you have any concerns, please feel free to let me know.
Sincerely,
Linda Liu
