I'm going to be doing a lot of programming using Visual
Studio 6.0 and am shopping around for a laptop.  People
have told me that I should definitely get a Dell and not
an HP or Compaq.  Any recommendations?  If I have it
custom built by someone any ideas on what I should look
for?

Dell, HP/Compaq, and Toshiba are reliable, in my experience.  I've had
problems with the mechanical construction of a Fujitsu.  I've never heard of
a custom built laptop.  But get plenty of RAM.

And don't buy a service contract.  Put the money toward saving for the next
laptop.
