Cannot open multiple documents - "Name or path not valid"

Hello,

After using VSS here for several years, I have suddenly found that I
cannot open multiple documents.  The first document opens correctly,
but when I try to open another document, I get the message, "The
document name or path is not valid.  Try these suggestions:  Check the
file permissions... Use the File Open dialog..."

This is likely related to a problem I experienced yesterday, where the
editor to view files (winword.exe) was no longer listed under
Tools>Options>General.  I had to retype "winword.exe" before VSS would
allow me to open files.

It's obvious that something has happened to VSS - does anyone have any
suggestions on how to fix it?

Thanks for your time,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Based on my research and experience, this issue is a configuration problem
in your specific machine. The possible reasons are on the VSS side or the
WinWord side.

To make sure about it, please tell me how to reproduce the problem on my
side step by step. I certainly appreciate your time.

Best regards,

Jacob,

Well, I suppose it's standard procedure to ask for the steps to
reproduce a problem.  Unfortunately, if I knew how to reproduce the
problem I could also fix the problem.

Fortunately, installing Norton AntiVirus 2004 and running a complete
system sweep took care of the problem I was having - my system was
infected with the W32.Swen.A@mm virus.  This virus also corrupted NAV
2003 along the way.  Very bad.

So, thanks for responding.

Matt

Hi Matt,

Thanks again for participating in the Microsoft Newsgroup Community!   I
have reviewed your post and to be completely honest, I think your best bet
here will be to call into the support team for further assistance.  This is
going to most likely be a configuration issue or just plain old database
corruption and will require more time to properly troubleshoot then we have
here on the newsgroups.

With your MSDN Universal Subscription, you do receive some free support
calls into Microsoft.  I suggest you use one of them for this issue.  All
the information you need to reach us can be found here:

Please let us know if there is anything we can do to assist you with this
issue or to reach the support team.
