Hey guys,

We have an implemetation of VSS 6.0 on on old box which is on it's last
legs... I need to move VSS off this box and on to a new box...

Does anyone have a link to a document on how to do this? Or can anyone list
the procedure here?

Also, is VSS capable of running on a VM?

Thanks!

Note the permissions on the share where the VSS database is located (you DO
have it behind it's own share, right?.. not shared with other databases or
files ...)

In Windows Explorer drag it from the old server to the new server.

Add a share on the new server with the same permissions as the one on the
old server.

Remove the old share.

presto - it's moved!   Just have the users select the new location when the
system complains about the old one no longer being available.

Hey Brian, Thanks for the quick reply...

Ok, The VSS directory is shared and i have made note of the permissions on
the share...
I have moved the VSS directory to the new location and created the new
share. Now, when the users try to access the data at the new location they
are being prompted for a user name and password... It doesn't seem to know
who they are any more...
When trying to log in as Admin we receive the error: Unable to open user
login file \\server\vss\data\loggedin\Admin.log
When I check that location on both the new and old location there is no such
file...

Any ideas?

If you're being prompted for username and password, I suspect it's a file
permission issue. Make sure the underlying file permissions are set the same
as well - not just the share permissions. If they cannot  browse to the new
share and open their SS.INI file in explorer the permissions are not set to
allow them access.

I copied a 3.5GB Visual SourceSafe file to DVD.  I then tried to access the
copied SourceSafe in the DVD, but can't.  When I tried to access it, I get

"Unable to open user login file E:\EE4.9\data\loggedin\admin.log"

Just like William, I can't find that file in the original SourceSafe.  What
is it trying to tell me?  Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Sam

VSS databases need write access.  That file is created when you log in.
Since your database is on a DVD, it can't create it.
