Understanding Sharing and Branching

Good morning,
I need to know what's the meaning of sharing and branching, and how to use
them. Unfortunaley I haven't found a clear -at least for me- way to
understand it.

I'm sure Sharing is the SourceSafe capability to share a file among various
projects. There are some things I cannot understand:
1) Why would I need to share a file between projects if I can place one
instance of the file in a common folder accessible for every project?
2) I really don't understand why VSS Explorer recreates the project tree
under the project I want to share files with.

Do you know where can I find a tutorial for learning sharing and branching?
Thanks so much for your help

1) If that's what you want to do and it's possible to create the common
folder, then you don't need sharing for doing that. Sharing is useful for
other purposes. One would be to have the same version across projects where
it's not possible to create a common folder.

2) Try sharing to another place on the project tree. If you share a single
file, you shouldn't get an entire project tree. If you're sharing a project
that has sub-projects, then those will be shared recursively. Maybe I don't
understand the question. Describe the steps you go through and the result
and the expected result.
