Hey Guys and Gals

I am about to throw some very basic questions your way so bare with me. I have never used vss but our company wants us to use it. We have the software but no guides of any kind. A co-worker loaded the software on 3 client machines and believes that you do not need to load vss on a server of any kind to allow it to work between the 3 machines. Now vss is loaded on the c: drives of all the machines and none are shared out. Which is probably one problem. The main problem we have is that when we try to connect to or create a db nothing is listed in the options to open? When we create a db it goes through the load but then just returns you back to the blank listing of what should be the db's? So here we go with the stupid ?'s. 1) What exactly is the DB in vss used for? I can setup a project and it seems to work (to a point). 2) Does vss need to be loaded on a server? 3) why is nothing listed in the db listing, even after we create a new one? 4) does anyone know of any good installation/user guides?

1) The db is used to hold versions of files that you check in to VSS. 2) Not
exactly. The VSS database that everyone uses can be on any computer as long
as the folder it's in is shared with the correct access rights. As long as
the other users of the database can read/write/delete on the share, it
doesn't matter if it's on a server or not. VSS clients just need to be able
to see the file system to get to the VSS database -- no server component (as
in client/server) is needed. 3) Not sure. Create one, browse to the VSS
srcsafe.ini file and open it. From that point on, the database should appear
in your open database dialog. Past open databases and their paths are stored
in the registry. 5) The product documentation and then the only current book
on the subject is available here:
