The install completes with all sections showing the green check mark beside
them but along the way, during the install of VS 2005 Pro I get two popups
saying "unknown error", I also get one during the installation of MS
document explorer 2005. I have SQL2000 installed, it also fails to install
SQL2005 express as part of the vs install.
When I try to start VS 2005, I get another small popup "unknown error".
I have uninstalled everything to try and install it again. I tried to run
the vs_uninst.exe (cleaning tool), but it doesn't seem to do anything. It
starts, then disappears never saying it has completed successfully, or that
it even installed or ran completely. All it seems to do is extract all of
the setup files, and then disappears.
The OS is windows 2003, sp1, with SQL 2000 sp4 installed.
Any help would be appreciated. I have attached a screenshot of the error I
see during the installation.
Ok, a little bit more information.
Finally I tried the runas command to install both SQL2005 & VS2005. Both
installed without errors.
BUT, ... when I went to run them with a local admin level account, neither
would run, and I would get the same error dialog when I was trying to
install VS2005. "Unknown Error". When trying to run the SQL manager, nothing
would happen, unless I used the runas command as well.
So, this is not working very well either. When I tried to uninstall SQL to
try and "clean the system" and start over (logged in with the local
administrator account). It would start the dialogue to uninstall SQL, but
when I finished answering the wizard questions, it did not uninstall SQL.
When I went to run VS when logged in as the local administrator account, it
did the same as the other account, unknown error. It would only open the
program when using the runas command, even when telling it to runas the same
account as I was logged in as.
I have now uninstalled everything, run the cleaning utility, (it tells me
there is nothing to remove) and will try installing again.
Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

::UPDATE::
Uninstalled VS2005.
Tried to perform an upgrade of SQL2000 Ent Ed to SQL2005 Ent Ed, when trying
to run setup.exe, it would do nothing. The CPU would spike for a second or
two, then nothing. When the DVD did the autorun, I would click on the
install SQL ... the splash window would disappear, and then nothing. Finally
I ran the setup.exe file and I was able to successfully upgrade SQL2000 -
SQL2005. The install ran fine, but when I would try to run any of the
program interfaces, nothing would happen. Finally I tried using the runas
command for one of the SQL tools. It launched right away. (I was performing
the install logged in as the local administrator account)
This was not a solution, so I then went to uninstall SQL2005. I clicked on
the remove button from the Add/Remove program application. Nothing would
happen when I was trying to remove the core Database program. I tried one of
the other SQL 2005 programs to see if I would get the same response. It
successfully uninstalled. So, I continued on uninstalling all of the other
SQL programs. Then I was stuck with the main SQL program not uninstalling.
Now It is no longer in the Add/Remove programs application, the registry is
no doubt screwed up, and I am not able to re-install it. It complains about
not being able to install the services.
I do have an image of the system drive from a few days ago, so I am about to
give up and restore the image.
I am worried that I will run into the exact same problem when I go to
upgrade SQL, and to install VS2005.
Any suggestions?
