Hi!

I've just installed VS2005. It comes with a MSDN library. Is this library
the same as the MSDN subscription October 2005 library, or should I install
that on top?

They are totally different formats - so yes, you need MSDN for VS 2005

No, just VS 2005 MSDN although MS seem to be still transitioning information
to the new format

I do not think you NEED both. However, both will co-exist on one PC, so if
you want to why not? Clearly, only the VS2005 MSDN is available from within
VS2005 but both would be available outside of that. If you don't find what
you want in the one, try the other.

You can limit the vs2005 version to include
only (mostly) the vs2005 stuff.  The regular
msdn has practically nothing on vs2005.  I
put both in.  You might get away with just
the vs2005 version, but the regular msdn
doesn't have those pointless expand-mes all
over the place that the vs2005 has, making
the msdn version much easier to use.  Put
the vs2005 version on for the vs2005 docs
(rarely have I used it) put the regular msdn
on for regular use.  And hope they don't screw
the regular one up like the vs2005 one. ha

Hello Markus,
I agree with Michael --- they are different product. if you need document for languages or usage specials for vs2005 (eg. C++/CLI ), you need to install this version of MSDN.
For system development, you will need MSDN subscription October 2005 library.  And you can install both of them in the same machine, they are different and compatible
with each other.

In addition, if you meet any problem installing it, please don't hesitate to let us know.

Thanks,
Rhett Gong [MSFT]
