I am trying to install the RTM release of SQL 2005 Express and after running
the setup I get the following:

Sql server setup has detected incompatible components from beta versions of
Visual Studio, .NET Framework, or SQL Server 2005.  Use the add/remove tools
to remove these components, and then run SQL 2005 Server setup again.

I downloaded the RTM release of VS 2005 which has SQL express bundled with
it.  I could not install it from the VS installer and others suggested to get
the self-installer.  There is nothing in my add-remove programs pertaining to
SQL and I  have run the beta cleanup tools as well but I am still getting the
above error after many reboots and reinstall attempts.  In the VS 2005 setup
I get the following, which is why I tried the self-installer:

[11/02/05,10:48:19] VS70pgui: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft SQL Server
2005 Express Edition x86 is not installed.
[11/02/05,16:10:53] Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition x86: [2]
Component Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition x86 returned an
unexpected value.

Hi,

Thanks for your questions.

From your descriptions, I know you are trying to install SQL Server 2005
Express Edition, which was bundled with VS.NET 2005 RTM. I understood the
scenario as below

1. Since SQL Server setup has detected imcompatible components, what's the
error message?
2. You have used Cleanup Tools to remove the previous installed beta
version SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
3. Have you also tried self-installer but failed with error message below

[11/02/05,10:48:19] VS70pgui: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft SQL Server
2005 Express Edition x86 is not installed.
[11/02/05,16:10:53] Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition x86: [2]
Component Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition x86 returned an
unexpected value.

If I have misunderstood your concern, please feel free to point it out.

For now please confirm you have uninstalled following components in the
Add/Remove Programs firstin the exact order shown below before beginning to
install any version of Visual Studio 2005:

- Remove "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition"
- Remove "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition"
- Remove "Microsoft SQL Native Client"
- Remove "Microsoft Visual Studio 64bit Prerequisites Beta" (This step is
needed only if Visual Studio is installed on a 64-bit machine)
- Remove "Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office System 2005 Runtime
Language Pack" (This step is not needed if you have only the English
Edition)
- Remove "Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office System 2005 Runtime
Beta"
- Remove "Microsoft Device Emulator 1.0 Beta"
- Remove "Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0 Beta"
- Remove "Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 1.0"
- Remove "Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Professional" or other related IDE
installs such as (Visual Studio Professional/Standard/Enterprise
Architect/Team Suite, etc.)
- Remove "Microsoft Document Explorer 2005 Language Pack" (This step is
not needed if you have only the English Edition)
- Remove "Microsoft Document Explorer 2005" (This step is needed for
post-Beta2 builds)
- Remove "Microsoft SQL Mobile 2005 Development Tools"
- Remove "Microsoft 64-bit SDK" (This step is only needed if Visual Studio
is installed on a 64-bit machine)
- Remove "Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Remote Debugger (x64)" (This step
is needed only if Visual Studio is installed on a 64-bit machine)
- Remove "Microsoft MDAC 2.8 SP1" (This step is needed only if you are
running Windows 2000)
- Remove "Microsoft MSXML 6 SDK and Parser"
- Remove "Microsoft Visual J# .NET Redistributable 2.0 Beta Language Pack"
(This step is not needed if you have only the English Edition)
- Remove "Microsoft Visual J# Redistributable Package 2.0 Beta"
- Ensure all Visual Studio 2005 products have been removed from your
system
- Remove "Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Beta Language pack" (This step is
not needed if you have only the English Edition)
- Remove "Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Beta"

After this, please perform the steps below and let me know whether it works

1. Run the SQL Express standalone installer,
2. Select mixed mode authentication, and set a strong password for SA.

If the above fails, would you please package the log files folder of SQL
Server Expression setup (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup
Bootstrap\LOG) and send them to me? I understand the information may be
sensitive to you, my direct email address is v-mingqc@microsoft.com, you
may send the file to me directly and I will keep secure.

Sincerely yours,
