After installing vs .net 2003, under the acquire "Service Releases" step,
I get the following error:

Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003
----------------------------------------------
/!\ Visual Studio .NET 2003 setup encountered
errors while attempting to download required files.
Check your web browser configuration settings
and your connection hardware, and then try again.
[ Retry ] [[ Cancel ]]

Usually, there is no problem with browser
configuration settings. The connection hardware
is also okay.

Once, "try again", to my surprise actually worked.

I think Microsoft needs to do more work on this.
The error message is far too obscure.

Does anyone else have similar frustration with the
vs .NET 2003 installation?

I had this issue. There is a hotfix, available from Microsoft and the kind
person who helped me was Tim McCauley timmac@microsoft.com and he sent me
the fix.

To make things quicker for you, you will need to privide your name, address,
phone number to Tim for him to open up a case and send you the free hotfix.

Good luck to you. I'd send you direct email, but when I try to email to
anyone on this list, it almost never ever gets through but bounces so
violently that it knocks the earth out of orbit.
