I am sorry, but this does not realy anwsers my questions.
Yes, I create a Windows Installer package to install Visual Studio 6.0. The
problem you discribes about upgrading this package is solved by creating a
new package (on customers demand)
The problem you describe about unstable system. Can you give me some
instructions on how to test this? Because, since i posted my questions, i
tried to created a package and it locks like it is working fine. i do not get
any strange messages or any other sign the system is unstable.
with kind regards

I had not looked at it yet but I have the same application on my list o
projects for a current client.
They want a completely passive install(progress bar only) so that user
cannot set install directories, etc.
Whats the best way to accomplish this if you can't repackage?

In de mean time i have created a Microsoft Installer package with Wise. This
works fine. This also creates the possibility of deploying the application
with only a progress bar for the users.
The only problem will be, as mentioned by Tim Macaulay, the automatic
updates.
The solution here is to create a MSP when necessary.
