FIXED WIDTH FONTS!

Can someone, anyone, maybe even someone from Microsoft, please tell how to
make fixed width fonts work with a dot matix printer such as my Okidata
ML391.  When I select a fixed width font so that it will print faster using
its own internal font instead of the bit mapped TrueType fonts, it prints
about 4 lines and then nothing else.  There has got to be a way to make it
send just the ASCII codes to the printer.  It starts out the way! and then
it switches over.  Why?  Please, please, PLEASE!  Someone must know what is
going on and how to get around it.
Thanks you very much in advance.

Mark,

Is this in an application that you are developing?
What language are you developing in?
This will help me find the correct people to address the issue.

Sorry to take so long to reply, Tim.  I sort of gave up waiting.  Yes, I'm
developing an application, but it doesn't involve the printer directly.  I
just use the printer to help in my programming.  I'm developing the app in
C#.  I hope I haven't waited too long to get your help.
Thanks
