Installing Error

I  think I'm in the right spot to write this...

Anyway, when I run the setup.exe for Visual C++, I got ths error:

"
16 bit Windows Subsystem
-------------------------------
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Miscrosoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application.
                                      |Close|            |Ignore|
"

If I choose close, it closes, if I choose Ignore, nothing happens. I then
tried to install it again, but it instead going through the normal setup
process, it now says that "Setup has already been run on this computer..."
And you can only add or remove something, but even I hit next, I still get
the above error.

So this promtps two questions: 1) How do I fix the error and 2) When I do
fix it, how do get back to the original installer to get the thing physically
on my PC. (I can't just uninstall, because there's nothing installed).

A few notes: I'm running XP Home. As of last scan, there are no viruses.
This version of C++ is 6.0 INTRODUCTORY EDITION. This is for a class, so I
don't have a CD Key or anything, which is lame because I can't personally ask
Microsoft for help. Anyway, the only difference between the normal and
introductory editions, as I were told, is the liscensing agreement. That is,
you can't produce and distrubute your own programs for money, or something
close to that, with the Intro edition.

Anyway, any help is big thanks,
Peace,
Walt

Walt,

We have seen this error before, and do have a tool that can fix the issue
and allow you to get the product installed.  Please feel free to contact me
directly for the fix.
