I just installed VS6, after which I installed the October 2001 version of MSDN (the last one to
integrate with VS6).

Unfortunately, VS6 doesn't "see" the Oct2001 help files. In fact, it sees nothing.

How do I fix this?

I have the same problem.

I had to reinstall VS6 and MSDN. The help doesn't work.( It does work from
the program menu):

Unable to display Help:
A required component is missing.
Please reinstall.

Reinstalling hasn't helped.

Charles,

I finally found the answer online:  there's a component that shoud get registered during
installation, which sometimes does not. You can fix the problem by registering it manually.

Here's a link to the MS KB article that describes the fix:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;250334

Good luck!

Thanks for finding this.

My daughter, for no really good reason rolled me back to the state I was in
when I bought the computer and it has been one of the biggest traumas of my
life getting back to a usable state.
