Hi all.

Sorry if this is not the proper forum, but I can't seem to access any
of the microsoft.public.vsnet newsgroups.

I have VS.Net installed, but haven't used it in months. Now I want to
use it (specifically VB.Net), and find that I can't. What makes it
worse is that I also seem to be unable to repair, reinstall, or even
remove it. Can anyone help with some info about what's wrong and how
to fix it?

When I open VB.Net it looks fine, but when I try to create a new
project everything is disabled in the dialogue that comes up. The
lists of Project Types and Templates are both empty, and the only
things enabled are the Help and Cancel buttons. (Help doesn't really
work either, but that's another story).

When I fire up the install program from the CD again, and try to
repair the installation, or reinstall or remove, it stops part-way
through with a message about the registry, then backs out any changes.
The error message in the dialogue is also repeated (of course) in the
error log, which is copied below...

[08/04/04,17:06:29] Visual Studio .NET Professional - English: [2]
ERROR: Error 1407.Could not get value names for key

Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your
support personnel.

Any help will be appreciated.

A few things jump out at me here:

things enabled are the Help and Cancel buttons. (Help doesn't really work
either, but that's another story).

These pieces seem to indicate to me a possible permissions issue.  Are you
logged in as the local administrator to the machine?  If not, I would start
there and log into the machine as the local administrator to the machine.
I would also ensure that the SYSTEM Account and Administrators Group have
Full Permission to the drive.

Yes, the user ID is not only an Administrator one, but the same one
which originally installed.

It starts to look to me as though the only way I'm ever going to get
VS.Net working on here again is to reinstall Windows and start over.

Ok.  Did you check the security settings on the system drive (drive that
the operating system is installed) to ensure that the Administrators Group
and the System Account have full permission.

Also check the registry hives to ensure that Administrators and the System
Account have the registry permissions.
