Greetings,

When trying to install from the original MSVC6-Ent
CD1, "setup.exe" dies before showing any dialogs with the
generic error "setup has encountered a problem and needs
to close....".

Looking at the details, it seems "vs60wiz.exe" is dieing
at offset 00008871.

Ive tried copying the contants of the CD onto the HDD, but
this doesnt help.

Im trying to install onto a new install (2 days old) of
WinXP Pro SP1.

Anyone know how i can get around this?

Thanks.

Hi

I have seen this before, and this can be caused by a busted 16-bit
subsystem.  Check out the below Microsoft Knowledge Base article to help
resolve the issue.

250343 PRB: "Invalid Command" or "Installation Wizard" Errors During Setup

Hello,
Thanks for the sugestion, but it doesnt work.

Using those command line options given in the article,
after setup does "searching for installed components" it
gives the error message "you must first run the
installation wizzard before running this setup".

Any ideas?

Thanks.

hi,
try following

1. if your hdd or a partition is vfat32, the installation should work properly
2. if your hdd is ntfs, take the following steps
2.1. copy the root files from your installation cd to c:\windows\temp
2.2. copy the setup folder to c:\windows\temp -> c:\windows\temp\setup

2.3. open vspro98.inf in c:\windows\temp\setup
    in section [common setup]
    "acmsetup_exe"=
    1,Setup\acmsetup.exe,,,,1998-04-24,,1031,OLDER,,,!ROOT,,,387072,SYSTEM,,,3.1.8043,
    replace !ROOT with SYSTEM
    and save the file
2.4. start setup in c:\windows\temp

after changing this little word, the installation works.
