I see plenty of people reporting that wpie15.exe crashed when
installing MSVS6, but I don't see anyone that seems to know
why.

I would have guessed it was something broken with Visual Interdev
and perhaps some frontpage extensions with it, but it still crashes
even if I don't check the Visual Interdev box during installation.

Surely there must be someone who knows what the hell checkboxes
to uncheck so MSVS6 can install without doing the wpie15.exe crash :)
I can only hope they happen to read this, and to have free time to
post the answer. Here's to hope in 2004!

Hi

This behavior occurs because setup is attempting to install Personal Web
Server on Windows 2000. To date, I have not found a way to de-select PWS as
an option (even if Visual InterDev is not selected as an installed
component) so I found a way around this by taking the following actions:

1) Create a new folder under the root of any local hard drive that has at
least 680 MB of free space

2) Using Windows Explorer, copy the entire contents of the Visual Studio
CD-ROM to the new folder

3) Locate and rename any instances of wpie15.exe that exist in the new
folder containing the Visual Studio setup files. Make a note of the
locations, as we will need this information in later steps

4) Copy notepad.exe from the \WinNT\System32\DLLCache folder to the
directory containing the renamed wpie15.exe from Step 3

5) Rename this copy of notepad.exe to wpie15.exe

Once these steps have been performed, log on to the local machine as
Administrator, then shut down any services, processes, and applications
that may interfere with the Visual Studio setup process.

Lastly, run setup.exe from the folder on the local hard drive to install
Visual Studio 6.

NOTE: Setup may generate a syntax error when it gets to the stage where it
lanches "wpie15" (notepad), but you may simply want to click "OK" to ignore
this error. Setup will proceed despite this, and complete successfully.

Thank you Tim Macaulay for the response to a question I have been searching the answer to for so long. However, this work-around did not fix my problem. It successfully stopped the wpie15.exe crash, but I still have another error at the end of the setup. I get the ACMSETUP.EXE

I have tried installing and re-installing several times. Under safe-mode, under administrator in safe-mode and regular mode, no applications running, etc etc. No luck. Still get the ACMSETUP.EXE Error

-More details on the error

Running Windows XP SP1, and all the latest HotFixes from WindowsUpdate.com. No idea what to do, please let me know if you can help me, I would greatly appreciate this! I need this on my Dell LapTop for several of my classes this semester.

Thank You for any help at all in advance!!
