I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 on a Dell Precision 490 system [Quad
core Xeon, 12GB of RAM, 300GB SATA2 hard drive].  I previously had Visual
Studio 2003 .NET & Visual Studio 2005 installed on this system.  In
preparation for the VS2008 installation, I uninstalled VS2005 [it wasn't
really being used at all] and rebooted.

When attempting to install VS2008 from the DVD ISO image
"en_visual_studio_2008_professional_x86_x64wow_dvd_X14-26326.iso" [mounted
via Daemon-Tools], I get the following installation failure:

The installation log doesn't say why the "Runtime Pre-requisites" failed
with a 1603 error.

I've seen quite a # of postings about VS2008 installation problems, but very
few solutions being posted.  I also did some searches of the MS KB and
didn't come up with anything helpful.

Has anybody else encountered & solved this particular problem?

TIA,

Chuck

I had a problem with the pre-req install portion of VS 2008 on Vista
x64.  I installed .net 3.5 manually and then re-ran the VS 2008
install and it installed fine.

I attempted the manual install of Microsoft .NET Framework v3.5, but,
unfortunately, it, too, failed.  Here's what was in the installation error log:

[02/27/08,09:26:46] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (x64) (CBS): [2] Error:
Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (x64)
(CBS). MSI returned error code 1

Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (x64)
(CBS). MSI returned error code 1
[02/27/08,09:42:48] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework
2.0SP1 (x64) (CBS) is not installed.

Further investigation shows that "Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (x64)" isn't
in the list of installed applications, but, when I downloaded it & attempted
to install it, the installer indicates that this software is part of the
O.S. & is already installed.

I'm not sure what to do next w/respect to resolving this problem.

I have similar problems on WinXP. .NET 3.5 won't install properly, it fails
after taking ages at an ultimately futile attempt to install. However it
appears to be installed. But the VS2008 setup disagrees and borks

I have exactly the same problem.

I'm starting a new thread on microsoft.public.windowsupdate regarding this
problem.  It's looking more & more like the Windows Installer itself is
damaged as a result of the last updates that were made on 2/13/2008.  Right
now, *nothing* that is dependent up Windows Update or the Windows Installer
is working properly.

.NET 2.0 is part of Vista (built-in). Have you tried to manually install
.NET 2.0 SP1? What are the results?
