VS 2005 on Vista won't open files

I just installed a clean Vista on my laptop. I installed VS2005
Professional. I also installed both the SP1 and the SP1 for Vista (did my
homework).

I changed the properites of the devenv.exe to be run as admin as I read I
should do.

The only problem I have now is that when I double click on any file that
should be opened by VS I get an error that the file cannot be found even
though I just double clicked on the actual file itself.

Any ideas?

Hi Tony,

From your description, After you installed VS 2005 on a Vista machine, you
can not open any files that should be associated with it, correct?

Does the problem occur right after you try using VS 2005 after installed it
or after using correctly for sometime? As for the files that can not open,
are they all the files (should be assocated with VS 2005) or one a small
set? Does solution and project files be opened correctly through double
click? When you view those files in file explorer, are the icons of those
files correctly displayed or whether the extensions of those files be
correctly set to Visual Studio?

For general troubleshooting, I also suggest you use filemon tool to monitor
on the machine to see whether any other problems occured under the veil.

Sincerely,

Steven Cheng

I can open VS2005 itself and then File/Open any file that I should be able to.

If I double click a project or solution or even a plain old .c, .cpp or .h
file nothing happens.

If I try to drag one of the above files onto an open instance of VS nothing
happens (the mouse cursor is the circle with line through it).

As far as I can tell the association icons are all correct. I pulled up the
Open With on a solution and it is set to Microsoft Visual Studio Version
Selector.

How do I use the filemon tool? I tried just typing filemon in the start box
and windows didn't find anything.

Hi Tony,

Filemon is not a built-in tool, you can download it from the following site:

#FileMon for Windows v7.04
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896642.aspx

Also, have you tried logon through a different account to see whether the
problem is specific to user profile?

Sincerely,

That web page says that filemon has been replaced with Process Monitor. Is
there a way to do what I need to do with PM? I try not to install any more
programs on my computer than I need to.

This is the only user on my computer. Would it make a difference to log in
as administrator?

Thanks for your reply Tony,

I think the process Monitor has a self-extract version that do not require
installation.

Also, sure, if you originally logon with a non-administrator account, you
can try logon with the admin account to see whether it work.

I've met many IDE related issues that are caused by something in user
profile got corrupted.
