orcas b1 on vista64 failure

I tried to install orcas beta 1 on a pretty ordinary Vista Ultimate 64
system here.

.NET Framework 3.5 failed to install, which presumably meant that nothing
else would install either.

Questions:
a. has anyone else here installed orcas b1 on vista 64?
b. in the SETUP log I see:

[05/08/07,18:02:22] Microsoft .NET Framework v3.5 (x64):

"

Can anyone here make sense of that? I don't know why, but I get the
impression that the installation assumes I am actually upgrading and that
certain components are already present/ But this is a fresh install.

During the attempt to install the 3.5 framework, I also see a popup dialog
from the Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSI) with a list of
legitimate command-line parameters, none of which is obviously relevant to
the problem I experience.

There's no real point trying to install Orcase if the condditions are not
right, but does anyone have any simple suggestions I can try?

Peter,

In answer to your question - yes I have attempted to install Orcas
beta 1 on Vista 64 and have run into exactly the same problem as you.

Nice not to be alone! I guess we're going to have to wait and see if the
automated feedback from the setup process results in a fix by the next CTP.

Most certainly not alone, I tried to install 5 times so far. gets into Dotnet
Framework v3.5 x64 and crashes every time with a 1602 error in the log file
"user cancelled instalation" ???????.

Even the Virtual disk version causes huge problems with hangups and black
screens. thats on a 3 gig machine with 4 Gb RAM

it doesn't surprise me, anything 64 bit and Vista seems to be destined to
failure. I'm seriously thinking of going back to 32 bit XP until Microsoft
gets its act together on x64 let alone Vista.

I have been wondering about that too, certainly if their /new/ software
won't even install on x64. At the moment it's not a sufficiently critical
issue for me though.

Just out of interest, you don't happen to be using an Asus motherboard in
your system? It's just that I had a lot of trouble with Vista with 4Gb
because the BIOS uses some sort of memory mapping approach and I eventually
had to switch it off, reducing the visible memory to something like 2.8Gb.
It makes no difference to the orcas install but thought I'd mention it
anyway (although the symptoms are difficult to miss:-) )

BTW, I had another go at this today and installed the .NET 3.5 framework
manually first using

\WCU\dotNetFramework\dotNetFX35\x64\netfx35_x64.exe

Everything else then installs, and so far it seems to work (i.e. I haven't
got very far yet).

Still various problems with SQL Server installation but I think that's down
to previous partially successful installs and can probably be sorted out.
