I am trying to install Visual Studio 2005. After starting the install
process, I get an error message that the file "vs_setup.msi could not be
opened". I can read the CD fine, and it will install on another computer, so
i don't think that it is a media problem. The computer that won't install had
a previous verison of VS2005 that got corrupted and then subsequently
deleted. My guess is that there is something left over in the registry that
is keeping the install from working. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi Mercier,
From your description, you're meeting some problem when try installing the
VS 2005 on your machine, and the machine has originally installed VS 2005
but corrupted, correctd?
Based on my experience, you can first do the following things to ensure the
clean of the original corrupted installation of VS 2005 and clear the
cached setup MSI:
Check the instruction for manually remove VS 2005
#How to remove Visual Studio 2005
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907965
Since any executed msi will be copied and cached in logon user's Temp
folder, you can try empty your temp folder(%temp%) so as to make sure no
old MSI is cached.
For new installation of VS 2005, the setup log file is a helpful resource
for troubleshooting, here is another knowledge base article introducing on
troubleshoot VS 2005 setup

Hope this helps.
