HI all,
I have recently purchased a new computer for development with Windows Vista
Ultimate 64-bit on board. It also has MS Office 2007 Pro installed.
I have just tried to install Visual Studio 2005 Pro and keep getting an
error message:
"Setup Failed
The following component failed to install:
MSXML 6.0 Parser x64".
"The following was not attempted:
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Prof. Edition - ENU"
I have tried copying the contents of Disk1 and Disk 2 of VS 2005 Pro onto
the hard drive and started Setup.exe with Administrator Privileges but it
still yields the same Setup Failed error. I have also tried turning off the
UAC but still the same problem. I then tried to install the MSXML MSI by
itself from the files on the hard drive (originally from the VS 2005 CD Disk
set) but it let me know it was already installed.
Has anyone been able to install VS 2005 Pro onto Vista Ultimate 64-bit?
I realise that there is a VS 2005 SP1 release but I am sure I could not run
it before installing VS 2005 Pro. What can I do now to get this simple thing
done?

Hi all,
I have finally found a solution to being able to install my Visual Studio
2005 Professional onto Windows Vista (64-bit) after nearly 5 days of
research.
My scenario: I have a new development laptop with Windows Vista 64-bit on
it. It is connected to the Internet wirelessly.
Before proceeding to install VS2005 Pro, I made sure I had all of the latest
Windows Updates.
There seems to be scant information on this scenario. After a discovering a
clue in a post from 2005, here is what I did to get my VS2005 Pro installed:
* I copied the contents of the two VS2005 CDs into one folder on my Vista
hard drive, called VS2005 (C:\VS2005)
* I made this folder Shareable after right-clicking on it
* Using Internet Explorer, I entered the URL for this folder but instead of
using the Setup.exe in the VS2005 folder (it appears this Setup.exe is the
one that gives the Setup error message), I used the Setup.exe in the "Setup"
folder that sits below the VS2005 folder. This Setup.exe allowed me to fully
install VS2005 and thus did not generate the "Setup Failed" error message
due to "MSXML 6.0 Parser x64" failed to install.
I also downloaded the VS2005 SP1 update as well as the VS2005 Update for
Vista and applied then in this order.
I hope this information helps others who might come across this solution.
