VS .NET 2005 Pro fails to run on Vista

I had VS .NET 2005 Professional already installed on my Windows XP (Home)
machine.  I upgraded to Windows Vista (Home Premium).  I then installed SP1
(VS80sp1-KB926601-X86-ENU.exe) followed by the hot fix
(VS80sp1-KB929470-X86-Beta-ENU.exe).  When I run VS as administrator, I get
the splash screen.  After about 5 minutes, I get the error message:  "This
application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."  The
same error occurs if I try to run VS .NET 2003.  I actually can launch VC++
6, but have not tried compiling (I use this as my text editor).  After I
dismiss the error dialog, the splash screen remains.  Task Manager shows
that devenv.exe is still running (using all the cycles on one of my cores)
and I have to terminate the process through Task Manager.

During the install of SP1, the event log has an error message: ".NET Runtime
Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32) - Failed to compile:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio
8\VC\redist\amd64\Microsoft.VC80.CRT\msvcm80.dll . Error code = 0x80004005".
I am on an Intel dual core 32-bit machine, not an AMD 64-bit machine.  But
this might be something the installer tries regardless, so a red herring.
The same error occurs in the event log during the installation of the hot
fix.

Checking other forums and on the Internet, it appears that others are
struggling with VS .NET 2005 and Vista.  Any chance that any of you know how
I can get this package running?  Without it, I have to rollback to Windows
XP to do software development...

Thanks.

Hello!

Look at my other post for my VS on Vista problems but in general I
succeded in clean installation of VS on Vista and installation of SP1
on Coer 2 Duo machine.

For more information on VS and Vista issues have a look at:

Thanks for the suggestion.  Copying the installation files to
hard disk and running as administrator did not change the
outcome for me.

I have already been through this page and a few others, none
of them providing any insight into why devenv.exe crashes
for me.

Time to reinstall Windows XP.  I cannot afford to have nonworking
development tools for this long.

The problem turned out to be Compuware's DevPartner Studio 8.1 , which is
tied into Visual Studio.  After uninstalling DevPartner Studio, VS .NET 2005
worked.  So it appears that DevParther Studio needs some help to run
under Vista.
