Hi,
I've just installed Visual Studio 2005 and moved the folder storing Settings (Tools>Options>Environment>Import/Export Settings) as well as Project and Template folders (Tools>Options>Projects>Common) to a new directory. Yet, Visual Studio still creates an (empty) Visual Studio 2005 folder at the original place ("My Documents\Visual Studio 2005").
How can I switch this off and keep VS8 from creating this folder where it doesn't belong?
TIA,
Axel Dahmen

Hi Alex,
Based on the description, you specify the new locations for your VS2005's
project and templates in the Tools | Options | Project | General dialog box
window, and then delete the original 'Visual Studio 2005' folder under the
"My Document" folder. But the VS2005 will create a 'Visual Studio 2005'
folder again in the original place. Please correct me if misunderstood
anything.
The 'My Document\Visual Studio 2005' folder is used to stored Visual Studio
2005 IDE's environment setting as well as the projects/templates. There are
also some other folders (e.g. Addins, Backup Fils, Visualizers ...) in the
directory. You can move the projects/templates folder to another place, but
the other folder cannot be configured into other locations, there are no
corresponding options to move them. That folder is a utility folder for
Visual Studio 2005, so this is why the VS2005 will recreate the 'Visual
Studio 2005' folder under "My Document" folder if it cannot be found. If
you create a new VS Add-in project and build it, you will find the result
.addin file would be generated in the 'Addins' folder in that directory. I
am afraid this behavior is as expected.
I hope the above information helps, if you have any questions or concerns,
please do not hesitate to let me know. I am standing by to help you.
Thanks!
Best regards,
Gary Chang

Hi Gary,
thank you for your informative feedback. I apologize for replying so late. You're right, it's been a couple of busy days for me...
I don't like my My Documents folder to be cluttered up with similar entries. So I'm grouping VS files into a Visual Studio folder hosting sub folders like V6, V7 and V8. I believe, VS8 should allow me to follow this structure.
So I've submitted an enhancement request to the MS feedback site at: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID
=231080
Would you agree on this? Or did I probably understand something wrong from what you've explained?
Regards,
Axel Dahmen

Hi Axel,
Thanks for the update!
I do understand your concern on this issue, using an 'My Document'
directory which could not be changed seems not a good idea for VS2005. I
will also forward this feedback to our product team for review.
Have a nice day!
