I have just installed Visual Studio 2005 Professional - I already have the
Web Developer Express Version installed. I was surprised that I was not
asked to activate the product ??

Does this sound right? I am wondering if I have installed it correctly.

Am I required to register it? I don't see any warning that I need to do
anything in order to continue using the product.

To my knowledge, none of the developer tools have Product
Activation - shoot mine didn't even ask for a previous version of VS
as proof of qualifying media for upgrade, but give it time, they'll
be Production Activation in everything, not just by MS, but
everyone.  That way big brother can keep up with what you do/don't
have on your PC/Laptop <grin>!
