Office 2003 Web Components Version?

PBSI - 12 May 2006 19:16 GMT Apologies if this appears off topic, but I posted to the Office.Setup newsgroup (not an MSDN managed group), and it's been sitting for days with no replies. And since the end goal is to install VS 2005 with VS Tools for Office working properly and I've hit a snag with a prerequisite to this, well, please indulge me. I really don't want to burn an MSDN phone incident for this. Thanks!
I have a Windows 2003 SP1 server with all critical updates installed. I installed Office 2003 Pro -- ALL components configured to "Run from My Computer". When trying to install Office 2003 SP2, I get "The expected version of the product was not found on your system." So I find KB articles 909074 and 912427 -- both refer to Office 2003 Web Components, mentioning "version 2" and "version 3", and the first document has instructions for resolving the issue based on the version installed. The latter document tells how to find the version of Web Components installed using Add/Remove Programs. This is all fine except that the version is reported as 11.0.6558.0 -- so how do I know if I have "version 2" or "version 3"?
Walter Wang [MSFT] - 15 May 2006 08:18 GMT Hi PBSI,
Thank you for posting.
Normally you can use Microsoft Dll Help Database to identify the software that installed a specific version of a DLL. In this case, you can try %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Components\11\Owc11.dll.
1. First check the version of your local owc11.dll 2. Visit http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?dlltype=file&l=55&alpha=owc11.dll&S=1& x=0&y=0
Unfortunately, it seems the database is not up to date yet, since in my test, I installed version 3 of Office Web Components and the version of owc11.dll is 11.0.8001.0 which is not in the list of Microsoft Dll Help Database.
In your specific scenario, you can just try to remove the current version of Office Web Components and install Version 3, just like steps described in kb 909074.

PBSI - 17 May 2006 15:45 GMT Thanks for your reply, Walter. My owc11.dll version is 11.0.6555.0, so I guess I am running version 2? Even so, looking at the database info on that DLL, I see nothing that indicates "version 2" or "version 3" of Web Components, so the only clue I really have is your info below. I guess I don't understand why the KB articles themselves don't include info that we can actually see, i.e. 11.0.6x for version 2 versus 11.0.8x for version 3. Trying to figure this out is waaaay too much work for something that could be so simple!
Anyway, I know it's not your fault, but if you can influence the KB contents, that would be great. In the meantime, I'll try uninstalling and installing v3 as you suggest.

You feedback about the KB is absolutely important for us. We are looking at continual improvement.
Would you mind letting me know the result of the suggestions? If you need further assistance, feel free to let me know. I will be more than happy to be of assistance.

PBSI - 18 May 2006 20:21 GMT Well, I've downloaded owc11.exe, uninstalled Office 2003 Web Components, and when I try to install owc11, I get "Fatal error during installation" right after files are extracted. I've rebooted, tried installing with my own domain admin account, and tried as the local administrator on the server. What do you suggest I do now?
> Thank you for your feedback. > [quoted text clipped - 18 lines] > > This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Walter Wang [MSFT] - 19 May 2006 11:35 GMT Thank you for response.
Is the previous version of Office Web Components successfully removed? If it's not, it's likely there're some remaining registry settings which prevents the new version from installing successfully. Please follow these steps described in this kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/295823 to remove previous version completely and try to install the new version. But be careful when using the Windows Installer Cleanup tool, we just need to clean the previous version of Office Web Components setup information.
If this still doesn't solve the problem, or we simply cannot find existing Windows Installer information about Office Web Components, we may need to try another way.
There's another kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884290 which describes how to use log files created by Office setup to determine the exact error and troubleshoot the issue.
Hope this helps.

PBSI - 19 May 2006 20:33 GMT Yes, Office Web Components was uninstalled successfully -- the Windows Installer Cleanup tool shows no trace of it.
As for the update log files, for some reason they are not present. I recall they were present and they did mention failures when trying to update Web Components, but now they are not there.
I have to guess that Web Components was initially installed by a SQL Server 2005 installation, in which case it should be v3. And I was able to run OWC11.MSI from the SQL DVD, which puts me back to where I was when I started this thread (unless the SQL server installation also did some configuration that was lost when I uninstalled it?). And I found log files for the OWC11.EXE attempted installations. I've included the entire first log below -- hopefully the errors at :the end of it will tell you something useful.

I've just verified that owc11.dll from version 2 has version 11.0.6255.0. The version from SQL Server 2005 does have version 11.0.6555.0.
Also I just tried to repro using both version and found no problem on my test environment.
I'm currently looking into the setup log, and will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

Walter Wang [MSFT] - 20 May 2006 14:42 GMT It seems the error is caused by an old version of ose.exe (%commonprogramfiles%\microsoft shared\source engine), owc11.exe of version 3 should update it to 11.0.8003.0.
In your log, it seems setup was unable to replace version 11.0.5525.0 which is from SQL Server 2005. You may try to remove the old version manually first to see if it works.

I was just able to repro this issue and it's likely an issue of Office 2003 Web Components Version 3 on a system which have RAID drives. I will report it to our product team on it. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
In the meanwhile, we can try following workaround to see if it works: 1) Run owc11.exe with following command line parameters: owc11.exe /T:c:\owc11 /C 2) Run setup.exe with following command line parameters: c:\owc11\setup.exe ENFORCECACHE=0

PBSI - 23 May 2006 18:53 GMT That was the ticket! The install ran and successfully updated owc, although there were no confirming messages of any kind when run this way. However if I uninstalled it first, then did a clean install, success was indicated at the end of the process. In any event, Add/Remove Programs now shows version 11.0.8003.0, and my owc11.dll is version 11.0.8001.0.
BUT... the installation of Office 2003 SP2 still terminates with the "The expected version..." error which was the cause for this discussion in the first place. Shall I start a new thread about this? Just kidding!!
But seriously, there needs to be better coordination & communication of version numbers as the KB articles are still useless as written. Nevertheless, I'm glad something worth knowing was discovered here. Thanks for all your help!

Since the Office 2003 SP2 still doesn't install successfully, would you mind posting the setup log file as described in kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884290/?
I appreciate your understanding and patience on this issue.

It means that I'm currently running version 3, so the SP installation error is bogus and no further action is required, if KB 909074 is correct.
It still doesn't explain the owc11.exe installation error, though, so if we can find a cause and solution for it, that would be wonderful. Thanks for your assistance!
