I've uinstalled VS 2003 from the MSDN distribution. I had no problems installing it. But when I try to run it, the activation wizard starts. It says my hardware environment has significantly changed and the product needs to be reactivated.
It takes about 10 minutes to go through the process, after which the application closes. When I restart it, the same thing occurs. I've tried this on two different XP Pro installations. Same result. Any clue as to what is/is not happening?
Hello Art,
Not sure what is happening there, but you could get a filemon and regmon
log of the launch process and track it down to what is happening there.
The other thing is, sometimes 3rd party apps get in the way of the
instalation. You could use msconfig to stop all services except for the
Windows Installer Service and then attempt the installation.
Start > Run and type msconfig and then click Ok
Select the Services Tab
Click the Disable All button
Locate Windows Installer in the first column and place a check mark in it
Click Ok
Reboot the machine
When the machine comes back up execute the install

Thanks, Tim. I'll try that on my workstation. What I did was deinstall the MSDN Enterprise Architect version from my laptop, then installed VS 2003 Pro from CDs I downloaded from the MSDN site, and the install worked. No activation messages. What is curious is the VS 2003 is not supposed to require activation at all. I'll try what you suggested and let the list know the results.
