Hi there,
I realize it has been ages since this message was originally posted, but I
wanted to share the solution I found in case someone else runs into the
problem.
Strangely there are two blank spaces between the words "in" and "directory"
in this error message... almost like the program tried to say which folder
has the problem, but failed to return the folder name.
After doing some troubleshooting I think this error (at least in my case)
means there isn't enough space on your C:\ drive or your TEMP folder may be
too full. To find your temp folder, open windows explorer and type
%TEMP%
or
%TMP%
(these should correspond to environment variables on your system.) Then
delete unnecessary files in the folder that comes up. Make sure to purge the
recycle bin after doing this. Restart the vs.net installation... hopefully
it will work for you (it did for me.)

I had exactly the same problem during the installation of VS2005 and managed to find (a very unsatisfying) solution.
My harddrive has 2 partitions, assigned to C and D. I noticed that my D-partition was not available in any view of the installer.
I assigned another drive letter (G) to it, and plugged in an extnal USB-drive (assigned F). Now the installer showed C and F and still not G. But the error message is gone and it seems to install perfectly now ..
