I am brand new to VS Studio (2003 Architect) and when I tried the Web Application walkthru in the rapid evaluation, when I tried to create the project suggested, I got the following error

"Visual Studio .Net has detected that the specified Web server is not running ASP.NET version 1.1. You will be unable to run ASP.NET Web applications or services.

But I went through all steps of the VS Studio installation and have reason to believe it is installed (unless I have to download it separately to install it?). Anyway, I was under the impression ASP.NET version 1.1 was included on the CDs and was already installed. So far I have been unable to find anything specific enough to help given my level of understanding, so I decided to try a post here. Can someone please help?

Hello, Tank.
Presuming you have IIS installed and running, you may want to review the
following:

Possibly by using this:

817267 PRB: "The Specified Web Server Is Not Running ASP.NET Version 1.1"
Error

Thanks Peter, but I had already seen this.  When I open Administrative Tools
and then double-click Internet Information Services , there is no entry
entitled 'Web Service Extensions,' much less the rest of it ... yet when I
open up 'Add or Remove Programs' it appears as it ASP.NET is installed,
unless 'Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1' is something altogether different.

Sorry to be so dumb, but I'm 100% new to most of this stuff. About all I
know is C++ and SQL, and I'm coming from an outdated Borland development
environment, so I've got a lot to learn, starting with the most rudimentary
and most stupid stuff imaginable ...

OK, I have one other possibility. It sounds as if your IIS and VS.NET are
not mapped properly. When did you install IIS, before or after VS.NET? In
any case, you might want to follow the instructions in Knowledge Base
article #306005:

"When you try to create a new ASP.NET Web application in Visual
Studio .NET 2003, you receive the following error message:

Visual Studio .NET has detected that the specified Web
server
is not running ASP.NET version 1.1. You will be unable to
run
                 ASP.NET Web applications or services.
                 MORE INFORMATION
To fix IIS mappings for ASP.NET, follow these steps:
                   Run the Aspnet_regiis.exe utility:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open text box, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
At the command prompt, type the following, and then
press
                     ENTER:

"%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\version\aspnet_regiis.exe"
                     -i
In this path, version represents the version number of
the
.NET Framework that you installed on your server. You
must
replace this placeholder with the actual version
number
                     when you type the command.
                   Register the Aspnet_isapi.dll:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open text box, type the following, and then
press
                     ENTER:
                     regsvr32

%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\version\aspnet_isapi.dll
Regsvr32 returns the results of the registration. "

Failing that, you can uninstall, then reinstall the .NET Framework to get
the mapping fixed.

Peter,

I discovered this 'how to' just a bit before or at about the same time as
your post. Thanks for your help!

It is still too early to be absolutely sure, but as of the moment, following
these instructions ...

306005 HOWTO: Repair IIS Mapping After You Remove and Reinstall IIS
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=306005

... appears to have solved the problem.

However, I still do not have an entry in 'Internet Information Services'
entitled 'Web Service Extensions' (as mentioned in the link you previously
provided).

If I understand correctly the question.... "Web Service Extensions" listing
is new to Windows 2003 platforms only.  So if you are running w2k or wxp
you will not see this.  I am assuming you are not running W 03...and that
is why you do not see it.  Hope this helps .
