SQL Server Compact 3.5 breaks VS2008 install

I'm trying to do a full installation of VS2008 Team edition for Developers
but I'm running into problems.

I've tried on two different machines both running fresh installations of
Vista Ultimate and no other Development tools have ever been installed on any
of them before.

The problem occurs when the component "Microsoft SQL Server Compact for
Devices" is being installed. The installtion stops and a popup showing that
setup.exe has stopped working is displayed.

The error log shows one single row with the the following error:

Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 For Devices: [2] Error: Installation failed
for component Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 For Devices. MSI returned
error code 1603

After rebooting my computer the setup program shows the main VS2008
components are installed but not the SQL server Express components or the
Crystal reports components.

Have anyone expreienced any similar problems? Any suggestions on what to do?

Any suggestions are appreciated

Thank you

Hi henrik,

As for the Visual Studo 2008 setup program, currently have you installed
the main VS 2008 IDE or is the SQL Server compact edition the only one that
hasn't been installed. You can check the "add/remove programs" list to
verify it.

Also, 1603 is a very general error code that may occur in MSI setup
program. You can try produce the verbose log for the MSI setup program so
as to dig further from the verbose log. Here are some blog article which
mentioned some suggestion about how to locate cause in MSI verbose log:

Hi Steven,

Thank you for your reply.

When I examine the installed components in "Add / Remove Programs" the
VS2008 for developers (main IDE), MS SQL compact 3.5 ENU, MS SQL Compact 3.5
Design Tools ENU, .NET framework 2.0 SP2, .NET framework 3.5 and .NET Compact
framework 3.5 all are installed.

I have also tried to create acmpact database in VS2008in a test project and
it works.

When I insert the installation disc and examine the installed components in
maintenance mode everything under "Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008"
is installed but red X-es indicated nothing is installed in the category
"Microsoft SQL Server 2005 express edition" or "Crystal Reports Basic for
Visual Studion 2008"

NOTE the error occurs the installing the component: "Microsoft SQL Server
Compact for Devices"

A more detailed error log is attached below. maybe the problem is related to
the "Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 For Devices:
ISetupManager::GetGlobalCustomProperty() failed to find global prop in
CBaseComponent::GetGlobalCustomProperty()" lines whatever those means.

Thank you for your help

Regards Henrik

Hi Henrik,

Thanks for your reply.

So the main VS 2008 IDE and SQL compact has been installed and you can use
them. The setup program(modify/remove mode) indicate that SQL Express and
Crystal report components are not installed yet, correct?

Have you tried creating sql express database or crystal report related
projects to see whether it works.  Also, in repair or modify setup mode,
what happens if you choose to only install those two components?

I've searched some further issues, it seems this is an general error may
caused by many things such as no enough disk space or disk error. You can
also lookup the eventlog to see whether there is any entry indicating
something incorrect on the computer.

Best regards,

Steven Cheng

Hi Steven,

I cannot create any SQL express databases or Crystal reports related
projects in VS2008

The same error occurs when I try to install the missing components from
modify/repair, both if I try both components or if I only try to install one
of them.

The setup has failed in this way on two different machines both have been
clean installs of Windows Vista Ultimate before trying to install VS2008. I
think this could rule out any disk errors. There are about 100 Gb free disk
space on any machine and plenty of memory. No other related event log
messages.

The only thing I can think of is related to the install medium. I've been
using the MSDN subscription DVD I got in the mail but I'll try to make a
frech copy of it, or download an ISO to see if that helps.

Hi again,

I have downloaded a new .iso file and created a new install medium and now
the installation worked!

Thank you for your efforts.

The problem seemed tobe solved.

Thanks for your reply Henrik,

I'm glad that you've got it resolved. Seems the install media does have
something to do here. I originally plan to suggest you run some clean up
tools to remove and reinstall, but it's not necessary now :)

Have a good day!

Sincerely,

Steven Cheng
