Can't install VS2008: "looking for vcredistmin_x86.exe"

I trying to install VS.NET 2008 using my MSDN DVD (disk 4400). I have a
Lenovo Thinkpad T60.

I am getting the following error:
"Setup is looking for file vcredistmin_x86.exe. Please insert Microsoft
Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition - ENU disk 1 now."

It then has a file browser. Now this file seems to live in \WCU, but it says
"The chosen path is invalid. Click OK to select a different folder."

On inspection, vcredistmin_x86.exe has a length of zero bytes.

Please help!

Looking in the logs, there is the following message:

[01/17/08,22:27:20] Runtime Pre-requisites: ***ERRORLOG EVENT*** :
E:\wcu\vcredistmin_x86.exe could not be unpackaged because it is not a
cabinet.

Hi David,

As for the VS 2008 install image, have you used it to install on other box
before and verified that the image is correct?

BTW, here is a thread mentioned some similar error and you may have a look
to see whether the info there helps you some:

I have not installed it on any other boxes. It only just arrived in the mail.

I will see if any of the programs mentioned in the blog post you linked
exist, remove them, and try again.

I thought .NET was meant to get rid of this sort of DLL Hell! :-)

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, .net runtime is aiming to address some of the
DLL hell issue(at least for applications that depend on .net framework
runtime:)).
If you get any progress on this issue, welcome to post here.

Sincerely,

Steven Cheng

I realize this is only a workaround, but you might try downloading the image
from MSDN Subscriber Downloads. That image works fine, IME, whether you burn
it to DVD or mount it in virtual optical drive software (like Daemon Tools,
etc.) and install directly from the image.
