I want to make a virtual directory in a web deployment package and not copy
any files over but reference all the files and folders that are alread on the
system.
Right now I do it manually in IIS manager with the wizard but I would like
to make it part of the deployment package.

Specifically I want to create VD for
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\ASP.NETWebAdminFiles
Can I do this in a web deployment project?

Hi Morris,

From your description, I understand that what you want to create a virtual
directory in IIS during your web application's deployment time(in web setup
project) and that virtual directory should point to a external path(outside
of the wwwroot folder hierarchy), correct?

Since the built-in websetup project's virtual directory is created as a
physical directory under wwwroot site, I think you should consider using
your own code to create such as virtual directory programmatically(through
customAction of setup project).  A common approach is using ADSI script to
create IIS virtual directory, here are some web resources describing this:

#Creating Sites and Virtual Directories Using ADSI
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms524830.aspx

#Creating And Configuring an IIS Web Application with Script
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/articles/20010609.asp

#Create & Destory IIS Virtual Directories - Programmatically
http://www.geekswithblogs.net/codesailor/articles/59734.aspx

Hope this helps. If you have any  more specific questions, please feel free
to post here.

Sincerely,

Steven Cheng

Note: The MSDN Managed Newsgroup support offering is for non-urgent issues
where an initial response from the community or a Microsoft Support
Engineer within 1 business day is acceptable. Please note that each follow
up response may take approximately 2 business days as the support
professional working with you may need further investigation to reach the
most efficient resolution. The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex
project analysis and dump analysis issues. Issues of this nature are best
handled working with a dedicated Microsoft Support Engineer by contacting
Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) at
