I have VS2005 and VSTO on both my laptop and desktop machines. I downloaded
SP1 from MSDN and saved the setup exe file to a folder. First, I tried to
upgrade to SP1 on my laptop. I ran the program, and it ran for about 10
minutes then quit. It gave no indication whether it successfully upgraded
VS2005. I went to the Help menu, chose About, and it displays:
Version 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.50727-4200)
And all the products in the "Installed Products" list display
"77617-168-7076001-41168"
These numbers (I think) matched the numbers on my un-upgraded desktop
version of VS2005.
Nowhere is "SP1" displayed.
So, I decided to give it a go on the desktop machine. I ran the setup exe,
and got a "Windows Installer - Preparing To Install" window that remain
unchanged for about 40 minutes. Finally, it popped up a message saying
something to the effect "Install Server Is Inaccessible" (I forget the exact
wording -- shame on me for not writing it down). I had to Cancel out of the
Installer, and when it finally terminated, I started VS2005, went to
Help/About, and now I see
Version 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.50727-4200), same as before,
but all the product numbers in the "Installed Product" list show
77617-168-7076001-41490
Nowhere is "SP1" displayed.
So, my question, is, was SP1 installed on either the laptop or desktop,
either fully or partially? How would I determine whether it was installed,
and how do I get it to do a full upgrade?
If it matters, I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2, Office 2003 and Office 2007
both installed with NET Programmability enabled, with VSTO SE installed. I
installed VSTO SE prior to trying to install SP1 on each machine.
I would appreciate any answers or comments. Thank you very much.

Installing SP1 takes a long time. What did you do with your laptop after the
10 minutes, shut it down? I have SP1 installed here on a Vista machine, and
the install took over 30 minutes, IIRC, but definitely concluded with a
dialog indicating the install was successful.
My numbers differ from yours, but the source of the difference could be the
different OS:
Post-SP1 Install
VS 2005 8.050727.859

Those #s probably change between levels:
