I get a "failed to install .Net 2.0" when I attempt to install VS 2005 on my
Win sever 2003. I checked the FAQ's and the knowledge base but found no
answers. Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance

Original or extra crispy (R2)?

If extra cripsy, use the Add/Remove Programs >. Add/Remove Windows
components to install.

Hi Joe,

Could you please run the installer again and provide me with detailed error
message here? Also please gather the coressponding error events in the
event log and the VS2005 setup log. The information should help us better
address the problem you met.

The method to collect VS2005 installation log is documented in the
following article:

904732    How to troubleshoot the installation of Visual Studio 2005
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;904732

Please let me know if there is anyhing unclear.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Hi Joe,

The 1603 error code generally indicates there is access denied error occurs
during the installation. You should make sure system account and your logon
account(administartor role) has full control permission under the following
pathes:

1) System directories and all their sub directories like: Windows,
System32, Temp, etc

2) User profile directories under Documents and Settings

3) The VS2005 installation path

Please refer to:

834484    You receive an "error 1603: A fatal error occurred during
installation" error message when you try to install a Windows Installer
package
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;834484

Thankyou again for replying,

I have followed the steps listed on the link you attached, all of my
permissions are set to Full for system and all other resources. I attempted
to reinstall, and still got the same error code:

[01/11/06,12:55:48] Microsoft Visual J# .NET Redistributable Package 1.1:
[2] Error code 1603 for this component means "Fatal error during
installation.
"
[01/11/06,12:55:48] Microsoft Visual J# .NET Redistributable Package 1.1:
[2] Setup Failed on component Microsoft Visual J# .NET Redistributable
Package 1.1
[01/11/06,12:55:49] setup.exe: [2] Unable to open g_szRegkeyMSIntegration in
CSetupManager::RemoveSetupFiles()
[01/11/06,12:55:49] setup.exe: [2] CSetupManager::RemoveSetupFiles() failed
in CSetupManager::RunInstall()
[01/11/06,12:55:49] VS70BaseUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft Visual J#
.NET Redistributable Package 1.1 is not installed.

I have even tried installing  VS .Net 2003 and i get the same result.  Maybe
should I reeinstall server? and try again?

Thank you again

Hi Joe,

Reinstall on a clear OS may be a more quick approach for you. If you want
to continute the troubleshooting, run filemon to trace the I/O or setup.exe
and vjredist.exe. See if there is any access denied error and if so where
the error is.

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html

(Input setup.exe; vjredist.exe as the filter string to avoid a great deal
of useless records)

Have a nice weekend.
