Unable to install Visual Studio.net Academic version 2003

When I tried to install the Program I got the message "Setup has detected
that some of the system components that are installed on your computer do not
match the versions required for Visual Studio.NET.  You must install a
different version of these components."  This is totally useless to me since
I don't know which componentes it is talking about or where to go to install
a different version.  When I get on Microsoft support website to send an
e-mail, I am asked for the product ID, and all of the ways mentioned for
finding it tell me to look someplace within the program that is already
installed!  This is like trying to send an e-mail to someone to tell them
that their e-mail system is broken.  Can anyone help?  I am running Windows
XP Home Edition.  I will call telephone customer support only as a last
resort because I don't like dealing with "voice jail" or thick Indian
accents.  You'd think the geniuses in Redmond would print the product ID on
the product somewhere and/or tell where it is printed so that I don't have to
install the program to find the ID to tell them that I can't install it.
Aren't software people supposed to be, uh, logical?

I am having the same problem too.  If you click on the title "Visual Studio
.NET Prerequisites", it will tell you to install some missing components.
In my case, my missing component is the Front Page Server Extensions for XP
(FPSE).  I followed the instructions for installing it but I couldnt find the
FPSE component.  Now I am still stuck w/ the problem and can not proceed past
step 1.
Please do let me know if you somehow found an answer to your problem because
I think we are in the same situation.
In my case, I am running XP Pro and also installing the Academic Version.

The other "reply" to your reply, which doesn't add anything didn't add
anything because these MSDN newsgroups don't work with my preferred browser -
Netscape 7.2, so I had to close it and open Internet Explorer 6.0.  Anyway,
my problem was solved.  What I didn't recognize was the top line of the
original message was a hyperlink.  I finally figured out when my wife told me
that "That is a hyperlink, stupid" and I clicked the hyperlink that I was
supposed to insert the Prerequisites disk.  I got the "Prerequisites"
installed and Visual Studio.NET is working for me.  If the geniuses from
Redmond had skipped the hyperlink and just popped up a dialog box telling me
to put the Prerequisites disk in, it would have saved my a lot of confusion,
time, and aggravation.  Better yet, they just should have made the
Prerequistes disk "Disk 1", since it seems you have to have to use it and go
back to Disk 1 anyway, which logically makes "Disk 1" more of a "Disk 2" in
reality.  As for your problem, I think the Front Page Server Extensions are
supposed to be on that Prerequisites disk.  Try running it again.

Yeah.  I also just got past my FPSE problem.  Using a link there really wasnt
intuitive.  It took me a second time to find out that I needed to click it.
