I try to install Visual Studio .NET 2003, and at the prereq screen I
can't get passed the MDAC 2.7 SP1 installation.  It tells me the
installation was unsuccessful.  However, when I check which version of
MDAC I have installed on my computer, the checker tool tells me I have
MDAC 2.8 installed.  How can I get around this .NET installation
issue?

try uninstalling MDAC 2.8. Install MDAC 2.7, install VS.NEt and then upgrade
to MDAC 2.8
