How to force restore of recovered files

How do I force or trigger Visual Studio and also Management Studio to offer
to restore recovered files?

Last week, Visual Studio offered to restore files days after a Visual Studio
2005 crash and after I had redone all of the work.  it was a little late by
then to recover but at least I took advantage of the offer to trackdown where
the backups were at for future reference.

Today, my entire PC locked up.  I had to power cycle to recover.  This time,
I was working in Management Studio and not Visual Studio.  I opened
Management Studio after rebooting and there was no offer to recover files.  I
made a backup copy of the backed up files that should have been recovered and
worked from that to continue my work.  At least I didn't have to redo most of
it.

I'd really like to know why Visual Studio doesn't offer the recovered files
on the next start.  It seems like the VS team may have gotten this code from
the Office team since Word tends to offer recovered files sometimes weeks or
even months after a crash.

Even more, I'd like to know how to trigger a recovery so I don't have to
browse to the backed up files and copy/paste them back to my project folder.

Thanks,

Dale

If it hasn't saved the files, then it can't offer to restore them.  You can
find the settings for restore in Tools...Options and you can modify the
intervals when the backed up copies get made.

The files are saved and I copied the data out myself but there was no offer
to restore.  My question is how to trigger the restore.

The last time VS offered to restore backups was several days later even
though VS was opened several times in between.  So what triggers the offer if
it is not starting Visual Studio?

Hello Dale,

Thanks for your waiting. I have changed all the setting in VS IDE and
Visual Studio Command Line. The recover dialog prompt automatically when VS
IDE detected crash. I'm afraid to say we cannot force VS IDE to recover
file. However, as you seen, you can get backup file from backup folder if
you want to recover files manually. This seems the only way to recover file
by ourselves...

Anyway I will continue performing research on this issue. If I can get any
useful information, I will also pass it to you.

Again, if you have any more concern, please feel free to let us know. We
are glad to assist you.
Have a great day,
Best regards,
Wen Yuan

Hello Dale,
Thanks for your waiting.

I have consulted VS product team. It seems they have found some issue in VS
2005 that AutoRecover doesn't always work after a crash, and fixed the
issue in VS2008. We'd like to recommend upgrading if you can. But, there is
no way to force AutoRecover dialog to appear.
We are indeed sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Please feel free to let us know if you have any more concern or there is
anything you feel we can help with. We are glad to assist you.

Thanks again for your understanding.
Best regards,
