[VS2005] Parallel batch builds?

Hi,

it seems like C++ Batch Builds doesn't respect the maximum number of
parallel builds property set in the IDE.

I've got a (default) setting of 2 on my SMP machine, but there's no
indication of a parallel build going on in the Output pane. I can also
verify that there's only one cl.exe process active at a time. This occurs
both when doing a normal batch build as well as when forcing a full rebuild.

Are there any specific restrictions for batch builds that I'm not aware of?
Parallel build settings are in effect if I just execute a normal 'Build
solution' command (ctrl+shift+b).

Hi Johan,

>Are there any specific restrictions for batch builds that I'm not aware of?

I am afraid there is no way to enable this in VS2005 RTM, this behavior is
by design in VS2005 RTM, the batch build manager will issue the build
commands one by one.

We are sorry the corresponding MSDN documentation has some inconsistent
description on this issue.

Thanks for your understanding!

I just hope the docs will be fixed in this regard, and that a KB article
will be issued.

Or even better up, why not implement a parallel-capable batch build manager
in a future service pack / hot fix?

You could consider that a feature request.
