I have an intermitent problem with VS shutting down unexpectedly during a
build of the solution. There are no errors or warning; the IDE just
disappears. There's nothing in the event logs. I've seen some posts in the
past of people having the same problem but I've never seen a solution. Is
there a patch or hotfix for this? Is there a workaround? It affecting a
number of people on my team, so I'd be greatful for any help.
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,
Based on my understanding, the problem is your VS.NET IDE will shut down
unexpectedly during a build of the solution intermittently, without any
errors or warning, and there isn't any related message in the system's
event logs either. Please let me know if I have misunderstood anything.
Before digging into the problem, we want to collect some information first:
Does this problem associated to a build of a particular project, I mean if
you do build tests with some other projects(or a new project created by the
Wizard), will it occur? if not, how about the project in-question?
From your message, you implied this problem also occurs in your colleague's
machine, it seems this problem could be repro, so which version of your
VS.NET IDE and your Windows system, and if it could repro with a sample
project, would you please send us a self-alone sample project(zipped) with
the repro steps?(please remove the "online" of my email address)
These tests and info will help us to research this issue, so I appreciate
your time in performing them. Let me know the results at your earliest
convenience. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. I
am standing by to help you.
Thanks!
Best regards,
Gary Chang

Hi Dan,
How things are going on this issue?
Sometimes the Visual Studio .NET 2003 may closes unexpectedly if you build
a large solution that contains Microsoft Visual Basic .NET projects, it is
a known issue to the VS.NET 2003.
This problem occurs because a duplicate hash value is created for two
different project elements during the build process, and it causes a stack
overflow.
If your issue is just like the problem I described above, then a supported
hotfix is already available and you can download it from Microsoft, please
refer to the following Knowledge Base article for more detailed info:
Visual Studio .NET 2003 IDE Quits Unexpectedly When You Build a Large
Visual Basic Solution

Thanks for your understanding!

Gary,
Thanks for your reply. I apologize for my delay in responding. The problem
you describe sounds like the issue we have experienced. It is a large VB.NET
solution that we've had trouble with. I have not had a chance yet to try the
hotfix, but I plan to soon.
