I subscribe to a few vsnet and vstudio newsgroups, but have often wondered
what's the difference between them?

Thanks.

It's an unfortunate nomenclature decision from Microsoft. Originally (around
2002) the newsgroups for Visual Studio .NET were named
microsoft.public.vsnet.*. In 2004 they added new newsgroups for the Visual
Studio .NET IDE using microsoft.public.vstudio.* instead (such as the
microsoft.public.vstudio.extensibility), apparently because the next IDE
will not have ".NET" word in the name ("Visual Studio 2005"), but they
should have waited and been consistent with the old nomenclature until VS
2005 ships. Now you have a confusing mix...

Thanks Carlos for clearing that up! :>

Yup, I figured it was something like that. :<

People still contribute to the old .net newsgroups though right?  So MS only
partially killed them off?  More like abandoned them? Why not finish the job
and ease the confusion? :>

Thanks again, have a good one! :>

Yes, but most people interested in .NET add-ins use the Yahoo forum instead,
simply the best: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vsnetaddin/

> So MS only partially killed them off?  More like abandoned them?

It seems that newsgroups can not be killed, so they starve...

> Why not finish the job and ease the confusion? :>

The confusion will only increment when VS 2005 debuts with dedicated forums
outside these newsgroups. See:
