Compile errors - only sometimes

Anyone seen this?
I can build project and all goes well, then start debugging and get build
errors, click NO to not run, start debugging and all is well again. It is
very frustrating especially since the dang thing has to check EVERY project
even if there was no work done on it.

I have seen similar.  The task list will show build errors for code that is
error-free!  (Stating that perfectly valid methods are not declared, etc.)

It seems in this case to be something to do with the background compilation
hanging up.

If I edit the code in some trivial way (e.g. delete a blank line, then
re-insert it), the compiler seems to 'wake up' and the build errors go away.
Now I can debug.

It has begun happening more and more as my project gets larger...  at this
point I have about 30 datasets, 25 forms, 10 reports, and about 50-60
support classes/modules of various size.  At this point I see this problem
at least 5 times a day...

the machine in question is an Athlon 1800 with 256 MB ram, FWIW...

I have the same problem all the time and it's really annoying..

I thought it may have somthing to do with the fact that I use Visual Source
Safe.. but if you guys don't use that then maybe it's something else.. I
also work on a rather large project.. 40 plus forms.. over one hundred
business and support classes..

What's really frustrating is that all of the MS people just seem to ignore
any posts on this subject..

Any comment MS.. thought not... ;-)

ah well.. roll on Whidbey..

Nope, no VSS here.  (tried it for a while but it was causing me headaches.
will probably check back in on it when 'VSS.Net' rolls around...)

For the first time today, I saw the problem the way Jeff described:  no
build errors at the moment that i clicked the 'debug' button, but by the
time it finished 'pre-build validation', there were phantom errors!  It
happened after I got done making some relatively big changes to a Crystal
Report.  Maybe the custom code-generation tool is interfering with
background compilation?

The interesting thing is (at least in my case), the errors are always the
same.  Strange because you'd think that as the project size changed, the
point at which VS.Net chokes would change also.  Maybe it's something about
a particular file.

...pure speculation.  no time to really try to diagnose these issues - i
have my own app's problems to fix! =)

good luck all! =)

I am getting the same  problem.  If I switch soltion configurations and build the solution then it builds error free.  I can then switch back to the original solution configuration and it too builds error free

I just put a post in .general called Compile Errors.  Check it for a Microsoft response

Good Luck all
