I know this doesn't answer your question explicitly, but can you not set the
display resolution in the laptop? Based on the resolution you cited, your
display may be slightly distorted. That high a resolution on a relatively
small screen will produce some pretty small text, IMHO.
I run Visual Studio at 1280 x 1024 in a 19" LCD here and the text is very
clear, but I'm not sure I'd want to use that resolution on a smaller
monitor.

1280 X 1024 on a 17" here - it's perfect. A caution on changing resolution
on LCD's: Don't. Run at the "native" resolution for optimum results.
When you run an LCD at other than native, the results are disappointing.

You can always set larger font size and still have more real estate since
all buttons/icons will be smaller. Don't change screen resolution from
native since text only looks well on LCD with native resolution.

Point taken from both you and BobF on not straying from native resolution on
an LCD, but at a higher resolution that 1280 x 1024 on a screen
substantially smaller than 17" (OP seems unsure if 14" or 15"), that's going
to be pretty small. I guess it will depend on the OP's eyesight.

I actually use a laptop with that screen res at home (I've seen it called
SXGA+ though). Text size shouldn't be a problem, I'm currently on a 15"
WSXGA+ (1600x1050) for VS2003 dev, and it's fine.
Like so many things, try and get a hold of a machine and try yourself. It is
a matter of personal taste.
y only comment would be to run any TFT at it's native resolution -- if text
size is an issue, tweak font sizes to suit, rather than stretching a lower
resolution...
