Is there a way to add a file extension to VS.Net so that it recognizes the
file as a specific type?  For example, can I add the extension ".stg" and
have VS treat it as an XML file - syntax highlighting, etc.?

Try to add it to the project, right-click on it in the Solution Explorer,
select Open With... choose an editor and set it as default...
