I've been trying everything.  I try to run Visual Studio and just get
the splash screen.  I've tried running it in safe mode, I've tried
another profile, I've uninstalled and reinstalled it, I've checked the
event logs... nothing.

I really don't want to rebuild my computer.  Anyone got any ideas on
even where to start trying to debug this?

Did you do a complete uninstall of all components, or just run the
uninstaller?
Steps for a complete removal (you don't say which version, so I assumed
current):

Uninstalling Previous Versions of Visual Studio 2008

and if you cannot find or uninstall the stuff listed via Add/Remove Program,
please try to use Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 to remove them.

I've done both of those ran the updates from www.update.microsoft.com,
and it's still not working.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I have VS2005.  I can see the hard drive crunching then it just seems
to stop.
