A VB 2005 project that has been successfully built and published in the past
will build but will not publish at this time.  The project builds
successfully from the Build menu, however, when I attempt to publish it, VS
gives the following two errors:

Error    1    Cannot publish because a project failed to build.        1    1    HourlyYield

Error    2    SignTool reported an error 'Failed to sign
bin\Debug\HourlyYield.publish\\setup.exe. SignTool Error: ISignedCode::Sign
returned error: 0x80880253

The signer's certificate is not valid for signing.

SignTool Error: An error occurred while attempting to sign:
bin\Debug\HourlyYield.publish\\setup.exe

'.    HourlyYield

The Signing tab on the project properties page shows a certificate
expiration date of 10-3-07.  Today is 3-25-08.  I do not know how or where to
get a new certificate or if this is even the root of my problem.

Help????

You need to re-Create Test Certificate (Signing tab in project properties).
It has probably expired. Also you user may need to remove/reinstall the
client.
I hear you can try changing the date as a work around.

I hadn't noticed the Create Test Certificate button.  That was easy - now
publishes OK.  BTW, what is theTest Certificate and what is its role?

Anyone feel free to correct me but:

The VS Publish forces you to use a Certificate (To ensure the publisher),
the test certificate you are using was expired. If you use your own  company
certificate, your users/customers can also trust all applications by your
company. The certs can be obtained from Versign, Comodo and others.
