Hi,
I'm trying to understand the process for using the source control in VSTS.
To do tis I created a new Windows Application project and added it to Source
Control. I added a couple of controls and a piece of code to the project,
built and saved it then Checked it in.

I then changed the code slightly and repeated the Save/Check-in process.

When I went to view the history, a Changeset had been produced for the
initial addition of the project. I was expecting to see another changeset for
the checking-in of the changes?

I tried the same thing again and still there is only the first changeset
listed although if I get the latest version it is the one with the current
changes present.

Have I missed an operation? Have I misunderstood the Cherck-in process?

Thanks

Hi,

According to your description, I understand that Visual Source Safe 2005
can't list the ChangeSet except for the initial addition of the project.
Please don't hesitate to correct me if I have misunderstood anything here.

VSS can list history for files or projects. I think you may mistake the
"listing history for files" as "listing history for projects".
For example: First, you add the project into VSS. Every file in the project
has been recorded in VS as added. Then you make some change in "Form1.cs"
file and check-in. "Form1.cs" file has been record by VS as changed, but
other files aren't recorded by VS as changed.
For this reason, if you right-click the Project Name in Solution Explorer,
and then select "View History" in short-menu only the initial addition is
listed in the dialog. But if you click the "Form1.cs" file and select "View
History" there are two entries in the list (initial addition and 2nd
ChangeSet).

Another way we can get the history for the projects by the following steps.
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181085(VS.80).aspx
[How to: View History Using a SourceSafe Plug-in]
Please feel free to let me know if there is anything unclear.

Hope this helps,
Wen Yuan

Sorry, you misunderstood. I'm not using VSS. I'm using the workgroup version
of VSTS for up to 5 users.

The documentation says that every time you check-in your code it shoul
create a new changeset. However, following tests, it appears to me that it
only creates a new changeset if the code has been rebuilt. I'm not sure
whether that is correct?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I understand now this issue occurs in the workgroup
version of VSTS not in VSS.

I have tested this on my machine. I created a new project and added it into
SourceSafe, made some changes and checked in again later, selected the
form1.cs file which I have made change to, and clicked "View History" in
short-menu. I noticed there are two ChangSet in the output list.

Have you tested against the same steps as mine? I think you maybe
mis-selected the wrong file for "View History".
For example, similar to my first reply, it seems like you clicked the
Project Name in Solution Explorer and execute "View History". This history
list is only for "ProjectName. csproj" file, not for your whole project.
Please execute the "View History" on the special file which you have made
changes to. After that you can get all ChangSet for this file.

Additionally, if you want to get history for your whole project, please
open your SourceSafe, select your Project Name, and then click "View
History" in short-menu.

Please try the above method and let me know whether or not this work for
you. I'm glad to assist you.

Have a great day!
Sincerely,
Wen Yuan
