Model Driven Development

L.s.,

To improve the quality of our products and code I'm looking into the
possibilities of Model Driven Development from within MS Visual Studio .NET
(Enterpise). That is, I would like to design in UML (Visio) and develop in
Visual Studio.

In an ideal world, we would first complete the entire design, generate the
skeleton code and than fill in the code. In the real world, however, design
desicions turn out to be poor (to give ourselves some credit: turn out to be
suboptimal ..;) and the design changes. Ideally, these changes would again be
made in UML and merged back into the existing code. This is where our VS .NET
/ Visio combination fails: I can only generate a new, empty solution from a
Visio model and I  can only generate a new visio model from an existing code
base.

Are there solutions that are able to merge the the code and the model, so
that code changes are reflected in the model and model changes are reflected
in the code?

Regards,
Martijn Kaag

Is there a way to

I am afraid we don't have such solution with VS2003, the Visio combination
with the VS.NET is somehow loose and has some limitaion.

Howwever you can have a look on the Rationals XDE, which is an extension to
the VS.NET 2003 IDE. It is a graphical component modeling and development
tool that uses the UML.  It allows seamless code generation and reverse
engineering. XDE also lets you create classes in various UML models such as
Sequence Models and Class Diagrams and the updates to those classes will be
reflected in all models that use the classes.

Hi Gary,

The Rational solution indeed seems to be the solution we are looking for.
Thanx!
