EIF vs. Enterprise Library

After watching the webcast today on the forthcoming Enterprise Library, I am
somewhat puzzled regarding the future of the Enterprise Instrumentation
Framework. I have read previously that the EIF was going to be further
integrated with Whidbey; however, it appears that MS is devoting substantial
resources to developing this new Enterprise Library.

The Enterprise Library "Logging & Instrumentation Block" is planned to
provide all of the functionality of the current EIF + Logging Application
Block solution. However, this forthcoming block will also provide 100% of
the source code and have a friendly configuration utility. This seems like
it will be a nice solution, when it is released early 2005.

Can anyone provide any real facts regarding the future of the EIF? What are
Microsoft's long-term plans for using the EIF in .Net development?

Thanks.
Al.

BTW, if anybody wants to know more information about the new .Net Enterprise
Library, you can visit the links below.

It is basically a large rewrite of the exisiting Application Blocks,
unifying them into a single library with several significant enhancements.
It is being written by MS in conjunction with Avanade. It supposed to be
available in January 2005.

I've sent some email to the Microsoft people who would know that answer to
this and have asked them to reply to this posting.

Cheers

Hi Al -

I'm the Product Manager for Enterprise Library and I was also one of the
presenters of the webcast you attended. There will not be a Whidbey version
of EIF in its current form. This functionality is being subsumed into
Enterprise Library, with the benefits you've mentioned below. The initial
release will target .NET 1.1 but we'll be building a .NET 2.0 version
shortly.

We'll be publishing more information on the roadmap and upgrade path for
customers on microsoft.com shortly.

Regards

Is the .net 2.0 version of the enterprise library available yet? (At
least in beta form?)
